This document is brief summary writing from discussions with various people. It was written for applying for competition in Helen Hamlyn Research Centre, and I thought it will give you more insight on Extreme Green Guerrillas project:

1. The issue:
We are forced to face the reality on a daily basis that environmental damage is more advanced than experts predicted. As global warming becomes the top of almost every government’s agenda, recent trends have put pressure on world leaders to act immediately: for instance, forced recycling, carbon offsetting and a 10-year campaign to make environmentally friendly living fashionable.
Are these efforts really improving the environment? Are these activities saving the Earth? What is eco-friendly living? When we live in a period where the worst climate disaster is about to happen, how can we live the ultimate green lifestyle?

2. The people:
As most green issues arise in developed countries such as the U.K., U.S.A or Japan, I have focused on people of all ages and ethics, living in metropolitan cities and concerned about green issues. I have divided these people into 3 groups to compare their attitude and understandings on green issues and activities. Those groups are:
A. Green Professionals:
People who use green activities/solutions as part of their job role. These people are scientists, designers and green activists.

B. Extremely Green concerned people:
Collective of people who claim to live ultimate green lives. I also contacted people in different countries to compare the difference on what is extreme green activity. These countries are U.K., German and Japan.

C. Ordinary people:
Collective of people that don’t have any emotions towards green issues. I contacted people in varies countries to compare the difference on what is the minimum understanding. These countries are U.K., German and Japan.

3. The relationship:
I started my research by having informal conversations with neighbors, friends and strangers in London and Japan. Then, I concentrated on people who are extremely concerned about green activities and engaged in discussions about their opinion on green issues in depth. These people include Greenpeace activists, eco-biologist and product designers. To get insight into other people’s opinions, I also attended some eco-friendly presentations.

4. The methods:
The initial research was informal conversation, email interviews and observation on target social groups, as well from researching the internet, books, papers and magazines. With this I generated the opinions and general views on green issues and current solutions.

Next phase of engagement method was by giving a presentation of my project followed by debate session. These sessions lasted about 30 minutes to one hour, and it probed audiences on their attitudes towards green activities and their imaginations / suggestions of issues relating to green future. With every presentation I gave, I gained more feedback to further evaluate the project concepts. The audience at my presentations ranged from one to one session, to a conference with four hundred people. The occupations of the audience included biologists, professional interaction designers, housewives, eco-worriers and students.
Attending green presentations allowed me to investigate on presenter and audience’s opinion.

5. The result:
A characteristic of current green trends is, that many people possess a strong desire to expressing their eco friendliness. A neighbor of mine once pointed out that if she is not eco friendly, she feels guilty.
One of the most interesting stories I was told by a 32years old Japanese designer, claiming that she is one of the “eco victims”. Since she was six years old, the Japanese government has been enforcing the recycling of plastic packaging. Her schoolteachers and parents told her, that the collection of plastic bottles from streets, her house or school was an important and good thing. She believed that recycling is saving the Planet. She felt as if she was a super hero.
Few years ago, she was commissioned to design an eco friendly beer bottle, so she started to research through recycling matters. She was very shocked as she found that there is no company buying collected bottles to recycle them, as it was costing more than producing new bottles.
Japanese government ended up with creating more wasteland for these collected bottles.

It was not only this person, but I was also very shocked with the fact she told me, as I was doing same thing when I was kid: I was the serious green person.

The main finding from my research is that many current green solutions became hypocritical because they are used as a medium of consumerism. From this finding, the purpose of my project became making a critical point of view on the current general green vision. To provoke a debate to stimulate audience’s imagination and opinions on their own green future, I have now created a group of people who is extremely concerned about green environment, called “Extreme Green Guerillas”(E.G.G.s). They are collectives of amateur self-sustaining people, who know that we must be extreme to save the Earth, but still try to enjoy a good quality of life in disaster situations. By going through research and experiments in various green solutions, their ultimate green solution became enhancement of the Bio-system by using high technology, such as RFID and Genetic Modification. Within this context, the project has spread into four design proposals in E.G.G.’s life.

A state of Intent : Michiko Nitta

to view pictures and graphic on this project, please go to:

http://www.myportfolio.me.uk/EGGs.html

An outline of main focus:
We are forced to face the reality on a daily basis that environmental damage is more advanced than experts predicted. As global warming becomes the top of almost every government’s agenda, recent trends have put pressure on world leaders to act immediately: for instance, forced recycling, carbon offsetting and a 10-year campaign to make environmentally friendly living fashionable.
Are these efforts really improving the environment? Are these activities saving the Earth? What is eco-friendly living? When we live in a period where the worst climate disaster is about to happen, how can we live the ultimate green lifestyle?

The context:
My project takes current green trends to the extreme. I am proposing a community of people called “Extreme Green Guerrillas” (E.G.G.).
They are a network of amateur self-sustaining people who have shortened their lifespan to sustain the ultimate green lifestyle. Whilst going to extreme lengths to protect the environment, they try to enjoy a decadent quality of life by utilizing urban waste and biosystem. This consists of embracing emerging technology to develop the ultimate green solution.

Design Approach:
Objectives of the project:
I would like to give a critical point of view on the current general green visions, because many green activities are used as a medium of consumerism, and become hypocritical solution. Even though climate disaster might be happening, I don’t want people to panic and just follow what they are told to do.
By illustrating an extreme green scenario through E.G.G. manual book, I would like people to think of the core problems and debate about it.
My point is not to say that this is the solution nor the future. My role is more to provoke with intriguiging artworks, have people question their lifestyle and get the debate on green issues going.
Background work and related work by others:
Research in Fungi Kingdom and related technologies.

Part1: Animal Messaging Service
(A.M.S)

Context:
Extreme green guerrilla is against using the Internet or mobile phones for communication, as this method will tie them to big corporation.
E.G.G. are also against conventional posting service, as it leaves a great CO2 footprint. What could be the E.G.G. way of communication?

Outcome:
E.G.G. send messages internationally by hacking into the animal migration system. In natural sanctuaries environmental protection agencies tag migrating animals with active RFID tags. E.G.G.s hack into these tagged animals to send digital messages internationally.

- Illustrations
-A manual book

Part2: E.G.G. delicacy

Context:
Do you buy only organic products? Free range eggs to support happy chickens? Somehow modern society has mistaken being healthy with green activity. Although individuals can be healthy by eating good food, this activity doesn’t necessarily mean the Earth is healthy. If you are an extreme green person, what do you eat?

Outcome:
Extreme green guerrilla’s food has to be resourced from existing materials within the local area. By modifying the urban vermin, such as pigeons and rats, extreme green guerrillas have created more edible and gourmet like delicacy. One example is an animal called Piguail, which is hybrid of Pigeon (vermin) and Quail (gourmet).

- Skeleton models
- A manual book

Part3: E.G.G. Death

Context:
The Earth is too crowded for sustainability, therefore premature death is the ultimate gesture practiced by the extreme green guerrillas. What would be the ritual they would practice?

Outcome:
When a member of Extreme green guerrillas becomes twenty years old, his/her ears are pierced with a euthanasing earring, this contains muscle relaxant and a lethal drug. This is a part of the ceremony E.G.G.s celebrate when this person reaches adulthood. This pierced earring becomes a permanent fixture.
Throughout their life the inner core of the earring rotates day by day. On their fortieth birthday, the muscle relaxant and lethal drug are released through a hypodermic needle, leading to peaceful death. By promoting a young death, extreme green guerrillas can sustain the ultimate green life. If you know your life will last only forty years, how would you behave?

If you are an extreme green person, what do you eat? Do you buy only organic products? Free range eggs to support happy chickens? Being vegan to save the planet? Somehow, modern society has mistaken that being healthy is the green activity. Although you can be healthy by eating good food, this activity doesn’t necessarily leading planet Earth (Gaia) healthy. Moreover, the Earth becomes unhealthy by having too many healthy spoiled human to sustain. So, what can we eat if we are extreme green guerrilla?

//——————————————————-

To be invisible in the natural system of food chain /food pyramid, E.G.G.s have developed GMO(genetically modified organisms) technology further, so that the minimum resource (animal/plants) can feed more people. they have modified wild animals to be beneficial to both human and animals. in this way, they don’t need to feed the animal.

//——————————————————-

Quoted from Report on 29th March:

Think about functionality, do the birds still need to fly, if so how
would your modification affect them. Also think about the story: Are they farmed or wild? Each choice leads to different decisions and modifications –farmed means that they need feeding themselves, wild means survival, use
this information to push the design process.

//———————————————————

EGG GMO – aims and benefit-

Modified wild animals:

human benefit :

No CO2 emission to bring food down = local animals .

No need to feed.

Less number, feed more.

animal benefit:

Survival function evolved by modification, so that they don’t need to migrate too far away. = Stay local = Can be caught easier. More number of animals survive.

//———————————————————

GMO:

1. GM soy contains significantly more of this allergen compared with natural soy. The British Medical Association had warned that GM foods might lead to the emergence of new allergies. 1.But why this GM fish is growing so fast?

//———————————————-

Quotes relating to E.G.G. delicacy;

Betes de style / Animals with style ;mudac
James Auger
p22
Man has bypassed his natural evolutionary limitations through the development and application of technology.

p23
… Sheep at this time were fatty creatures, so a little breeding was necessary. this led to the Dishley, a breed characterised by a light bone structure and more lean meat in proportion to fat.
For animals who choose to base themselves within the reals of human babitation, being useful is a priority for them to have any chance of survival.

P24
… The GloFish is now legally sold in the United States as a novelty pet. This raises the question of how far animals are willing to divert from their natural forms and behavior to satisfy mankind. As emerging technologies become increasingly profound, the potential for extreme modification turns into a reality. … Ethical considerations aside, genetic modification will give breeders (designers?) more control, more turnover, and offer more radical possibilities than the natural methods of selective breeding.

The meat industry, with its dubious motives for profiteering, may eventually find more dramatic solutions; a recent news item highlighted the case of the Bald chicken;
Professor Avigdor Cahaner, who led the project, told the BBC; “this is not a genetically modified chicken- it comes from a natural vreed whose characteristics have been known for 50years.”the featherless birds would tend to be leaner, and perhaps grow faster, he said, which whould improve the quality of the meat and save producers money.

After Man ; A zoology of the future
Dougal Dixon

p21

… the maximum efficiency of an animals is about ten per cent. This ten per cent factor is present at all stages of the food chain and means that in any environment a hundred herbivores can support only ten carnivores, and these ten carnivores can in turn support only one “second-stage” carmovpre. These fgures are oversimplified and refer to animals of the same size. The important factor is the weight of the animals rather than the number of individuals. The ten per cent factor holds true for every stage in the complicated pattern of food chains and is an important factor leading to the stable shape of the food pyramid.

p39

… they were generally lightly built running animals, able to escape quickly from predators and with teeth particularly suited to cropping leaves and grasses. The ungulates were widely used by man for his ow purposes. Cows and goats were domesticated for mild and meat, sheep were bred for wool and the skins of many were used for leather. Horses and oxen were harnessed to work for man and become so dependent on him that they could no longer survive.
The deer, the wild ungulates of the temperate latitudes, fared little better, Vast tracts of temperate woodlands had been destroyed to make room for man’scities and to provide agricultural land. This interference with their numbers fell to a level from which they never recovered. What then could take their place? the whole ecological niche was vecant with nothing to exploit it. Which creature was best placed to take the initiative?
During the Age of Man a slamm-scale grazer was present that was so successful it was considered to be a pest. the rabbit wqs so seriously destructive of amn’s crops, that man made numerous attempts to control it and even attempted to exterminate it. Yet no matter what actions he took he never succeeded in getting rid of it completely.

p106

The valuphant, Valudorsum gravum, is the largest ungulate … its most distinctive feature is the tall ridge running down its back and neck. The ridge is supported by the neural spines of the vertebrae and amay be of use in regulating the animal’s temperature.

From researching through many green theories, I found out Gaia Hypothesis by James Lovelock, which is the closest theory to EGG’s theory. Here is the description on what is Gaia Hypothesis:

The Gaia hypothesis is an ecological theory that proposes that the living matter of planet Earth functions like a single organism (Wiki).

Gaia hypothesis offers a different way of viewing Earth:
1.A holistic way, instead of a reductionistic way.
2.A view of mutualism, not separationism.
3.Amazing ability of maintaining its homeostasis (30% increase in solar radiation, but the same temperature about 15C).
4.Gaia does go evolution.
5.View of human beings as the weed of mammals? The cancer of Gaia.
(link)

地球が生命ならば、増えすぎた人類と はあたかもその身に巣食うガン細胞のようなものである。ガンは自身から生まれ出で、やがてその身を死に至らしめる、と。 (link)

…最近、人間に対して自然界が厳しいと感じることはありませんか？それはもしかしたら自然界が送り込んだ免疫抗体かも・・・。(link)

after having C on 28th February, I started to wonder about what kind of people am I talking about. Who wants to be Extreme Green Guerrilla, and Why? I have feeling that I must make this clear, otherwise everyone will interpret my concepts individually, so that it will be too confusing.

Ground Aim
I want to point out that current green movement is hypocritical. That is because every solution we are told to do is either
1. Trapped in consumerism. (e.g. green offsetting, recycling, bio-energy)
2. Human is always priority.
3.Eco-terrorism which is not so clear what for they are doing it.(greenpeace’s whale battle, )

manifesto
1. earth is too crowded for utopia.

1.born as human is already sinful.

1.human being is the cancer of Gaia(Earth).

1.become invisible in natural system.

1. one’s death should mean something.

1. never be hypocritical for green future.

EGGs are…

the director of the earth, superior to human kind. Their task is to maintain the planet earth’s health by any means.

so, are they protesters? guerrillas? green warriors? what are they? This is my research into different kind of groups/people who try to change the world by extreme activities:

guerrilla:
Definition
a member of an unofficial military group that is trying to change the government by making sudden, unexpected attacks on the official army forces:
A small band of guerrillas has blown up a train in the mountains.
(from Cambridge Advanced Learner’s Dictionary)

guerrilla:
(n.) Usually local band of militia who use their knowledge of the terrain to their advantage by ambushing and never engaging in open warfare.
-Chris’s guerrilla, great ground brief !!
- Gandhi
-Che Guevara

guerrilla warfare
mobile, army. Typically the smaller guerrilla army will either use its defensive status to draw its opponent into terrain which is better suited to the former or take advantage of its greater mobility by conducting surprise attacks at vulnerable targets, often deep in enemy territory.

protest:
Protest expresses relatively overt reaction to events or situations. Protesters may organize a protest as a way of publicly and forcefully making their opinions heard in an attempt to influence public opinion or government policy, or may undertake direct action to attempt to directly enact desired changes themselves.
Newbury bypass;

environmentalism:
Environmentalism is a concern for the preservation, restoration, or improvement of the natural environment, such as the conservation of natural resources, prevention of pollution, and certain land use actions. It often supports the struggles of indigenous peoples against the spread of globalisation to their way of life, which is seen as less harmful to the environment.
-David Suzuki

E-terrorism:
The term E-terrorism is a neologism used to describe threats and/or acts of violence (both against people and against property), sabotage, vandalism, property damage and intimidation committed in the name of environmentalism.

Activism:
Activism, in a general sense, can be described as intentional action to bring about social or political change. This action is in support of, or opposition to, one side of an often controversial argument.

visiting cologne Univ. was good experience. I could talk with plant biologists, and got good feedback about M.

Professor Marcel Bucher have suggested me the following option:
decompose dead body with M to enhance the growth of maize; which is used for bio-fuel. Following documents are the facts about maize fuel from http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/sci/tech/5369284.stm

-The grain required to fill the petrol tank of a Range Rover with ethanol is sufficient to feed one person per year.

-the Amazon is being burned to plant more sugar and soybeans, and Southeast Asia, where oil palm plantations are destroying the rain-forest habitat of orangutans and many other species.

-If ethanol is imported from the US, it will likely come from maize, which uses fossil fuels at every stage in the production process, from cultivation using fertilisers and tractors to processing and transportation. Growing maize appears to use 30% more energy than the finished fuel produces, and leaves eroded soils and polluted waters behind

-Meeting the 5.75% target would require, according to one authoritative study, a quarter of the EU’s arable land

Bio-tech boost

So what is to be done? The first step is to increase our understanding of how nature works to produce energy.

Amazingly, scientists do not yet have a full understanding of the workings of photosynthesis, the process by which plants use solar energy to absorb carbon dioxide and build carbohydrates.

The Swiss bio-tech firm Syngenta is developing a genetically engineered maize that can help convert itself into ethanol by growing a particular enzyme.

Others are designing trees that have less Lignin, the strength-giving substance that enables them to stand upright, but makes it more difficult to convert the tree’s cellulose into ethanol.

DOLPHIN

in March 2003, nine US Navy dolphins and sea lions became the first marine mammals to take part in mine clearing operations in an active combat situation in the Umm Qasr harbour, Northern Persian Gulf, Iraq The US Navy has been working with sea mammals since the 1950s.

SEA-LION

Mine detection
Trained dolphins use their biological sonar(echolocation) to alert personnel to the location of sea mines.
Dolphins and sea lions are trained to protect piers, ships, harbours and anchorages against unauthorised swimmers, divers and vehicles. Dolphins were first used during the Vietnam War. It has been speculated that they were used offensively to attack enemy divers with hydrogen filled syringes, but the US Navy denies this.
Object recovery.
Since 1975, Californian sea lions have been used to locate and recover underwater objects.

ROBO-ANIMAL

the US Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency also funds research into robots. One company is developing an robot that mimics the actions of an animal and is designed to be used for transportation. it is the size of a large dog, or small mule. it can trot at 3.3mph, climb a 35 degree slope and carry a 120lb load. Another company is working with DARPA to develop bomb-sniffing robots that are designed to protect soldiers from explosive devices.
A ‘Robolobster’ has been developed for the Navy and a marsupial rotob was used in search and rescue operations at the World Trade Centre following the September 11 terrorist attack.

LAIKA THE POOR DOG

the Soviet Union sent the first dog, Laika, into orbit on the spacecraft Sputnik 2 on 2 November 1957. Laika was a stray who was specially trained. Although Sputnik 2 was fitted with life-suuport systems, it was not designed to return to earth. Laika died from over-heating and stress just a few hours into the mission. Sputnik 2 circled the Earth 2570 times and burned up in the earth’s atmosphere on 4 April 1958. At least 13 other Russian dogs were launched into orbit between November 1957 and March 1961. Five of the dogs died in Flight.

CANARY

British officer with two per canaries, 1918. canaries were also used to detect poison gas in the First World War.

PIG

Soda the pig sniffs out an anti-personnel device in southern Israel, September 2003. Pigs have been found to have a superior sense of smell to dogs and are easier and cheaper to train.

RATS

:Below:
A giant pouched rat. Pouched rats can clear about 150 square metres of ground in 30 minutes and are able to detect most types of mine. The cost of training a rat in mine detection is about a thousand pounds, one fifth of what it costs to train a dog for the same task.

PIGEON

ANIMAL BOMB

DOG

PIGEON.
in the 1950s at Camp Detrick, Maryland, the US military developed a pigeon bomb in an attempt to perfect a way of destroying an enemy’s good supplies. The feathers of the pigeon were dusted wit cereal rust spores, a disease that attacks crops. It was discovered that after a 100-mile flight enough spores remained on the feathers to infect the oats in the pigeon’s cages. The military then experimented with dropping pigeons out of aircraft over the Virgin Islands. finally they dispensed with live birds and filled a ‘cluster bomb’ with contaminated turkey feathers. The first anti-crop bombs went into production for the US Air Force in 1951.

Microsoft estimates that it costs $55 to $70 per year for an average business to allow one computer to sit idle. Multiply that times 100 million computers and you realize that the world spends $5 to $7 billion* dollars every year powering inactive computers. Shifting 100 million computers into low-power sleep mode for 12 hours per day could easily cut worldwide C02 production by 45 million tons per year.
It is estimated there are 660 million computers in use worldwide, the majority of which run some iteration of a Microsoft operating system. Generating the electricity needed to power those computers requires hundreds of power plants that produce billions of tons of CO2 emissions. Many of those machines sit idle for 12 to 16 hours per day, burning electricity, but not doing any work, because businesses habitually leave their computers running overnight.
The multimillion-pound campaign, which has won the admiration of Tony Blair and Gordon Brown, aims to persuade a billion people worldwide to take simple steps to reduce their emissions of carbon dioxide, the main cause of global warming, by one ton per year.

KT Tunstall will front the campaign; she has personally saved more than four tons of CO2 a year by deciding not to have a car, installing energy-efficient light bulbs, showering instead of having baths (except when “really tired”) and unplugging all her electrical equipment when she is not using it. On top of that, she runs her American tour bus on bio diesel and makes her CDs carbon neutral.

The actors Orlando Bloom, Jude Law and Josh Hartnett have also joined the campaign. And a battery of other stars – including Brad Pitt, Jake Gyllenhaal, Cameron Diaz, Leonardo DiCaprio, Julia Roberts and George Clooney – have reduced their footprints through the work of another organisation, the Environmental Media Association, which is forming a partnership with Global Cool.

This is the project about EEG funeral and burial. for EEG clan, Dying the eternal activity, as being dead body will be the only way to be useful for nature. What would be the ritual they would practice? What kind of process they have to go through to be able to erase body remain completely in EEG way?

1.WHAT KIND OF PLACE They would die?
one of the EEG policy is to live as short as possible. they never be treated to live longer, rather encouraged to die as soon as possible. As a result, a hospital, where most modern people would die, will be something like euthanasia clinic, where you are encouraged and helped to die in ecological way. I will call it “Composting Clinic”.

2.Practice in Clinic.
1. prepare to be easier to compost own body.
-create ACID body by eating fatty, unhealthy food.(酸性土壌だと、骨が腐りやすい）
-create fragile bone. 骨粗鬆症の危険因子

Alternatively, the patients can ask to get euthanasia in Ecological way. they are asked to use Eco-euthanasia, which contains three kind of liquid, water, anesthesia, andここに何か自然の即死するような物。the patient push the first button to put water into body through injection, then push second button to put anesthesia, then once patient sleeps, Doctor push the last button to lead the patient to death.

3. Dead body and funeral
once this person finally dies, doctors take “death mask” as an memento with plaster. Then they have to cut up the body into small pieces, and wrap these pieces into a kind of cloth woven with ここに何か．
This human shape mummy then brought to garden they own, and funeral starts at this grave. first, the priest come to read, speech goes on, then guests and family members are asked to sprinkle spawn onto dead body, one by one. when everyone finishes, body will be buried 2m under the ground.

4. revisit of grave.
The dead body will be decomposed by preferable fungus which they choose. when the time comes, some edible fungus will grow from the dead body in human body shape. then the family can come for a fungal foray every season to
1. complete recycle of dead body, as the fungus can be eaten.
2.１回忌、２回忌などが自然に行われる．

Many of those machines sit idle for 12 to 16 hours per day, burning electricity, but not doing any work, because businesses habitually leave their computers running overnight. Scientists found out that shifting 100 million computers into low-power sleep mode for 12 hours per day could easily cut worldwide C02 production by 45 million tons. EEG clans of course concerned about this problem, and they have own communication system called Animal Posting Service (APS). By enhancing animal migration system with tagging technology, they can communicate worldwide with minimum CO2 production.

Tracking is done by using transmitters. The type of transmitter used depends on the location and the kind of fish being followed. A common method for tracking fish is to attach an acoustic device to the fish externally or insert it in a body cavity. The device emits ultrasound pulses, which are then converted into sounds that humans can hear. The signals are monitored from either a boat or a riverbank, and they usually have a maximum range of half a mile. Using such tracking devices allows scientists to learn more about fish migration. Much of the tracking requires that the fish be followed closely by boat, but computers and other automated equipment are being developed to make it easier to gather information.

2-3. Lemmings migration. The reason for the cyclic change in population is still not completely understood. Anyway, the main cause for their mass migration is high density with decreasing/used up food supply. The cycle length lies between 3 and 5 years with an average of 3.8 years.Lemmings migrate periodically from their home area when their population begins to exceed the food supply. They swim across streams and rivers in order to find land with food; sometimes, however, lemmings try to swim bodies of water that are too deep and may drown in great numbers.

The homing pigeon is a variety of domesticated Rock Pigeon (Columba livia) that has been selectively bred to be able to find its way home over extremely long distances. Because any pigeon generally returns to its own nest and its own mate, it was relatively easy to selectively breed the birds that repeatedly found their way home over long distances. Flights as long as 1689 miles have been recorded by exceptional birds in competition pigeon racing. Their average flying speed over moderate distances is around 30 miles per hour, but they can achieve bursts of speed up to 60 mph. Homing pigeons have been used to carry messages written on thin light paper (such as cigarette paper) in a small tube attached to one leg; this is called pigeon post.
Some researchers believe that pigeons navigate by Earth’s magnetic field.
Research by Floriano Papi (Italy, early 1970s) and newer research published in the February, 2004 issue of Animal Behaviour suggest that pigeons also orient themselves by odors and/or combinations of odors. (See the August 20, 2005 issue of Science News.
