This document is brief summary writing from discussions with various people. It was written for applying for competition in Helen Hamlyn Research Centre, and I thought it will give you more insight on Extreme Green Guerrillas project:

1. The issue:
We are forced to face the reality on a daily basis that environmental damage is more advanced than experts predicted. As global warming becomes the top of almost every government’s agenda, recent trends have put pressure on world leaders to act immediately: for instance, forced recycling, carbon offsetting and a 10-year campaign to make environmentally friendly living fashionable.
Are these efforts really improving the environment? Are these activities saving the Earth? What is eco-friendly living? When we live in a period where the worst climate disaster is about to happen, how can we live the ultimate green lifestyle?

2. The people:
As most green issues arise in developed countries such as the U.K., U.S.A or Japan, I have focused on people of all ages and ethics, living in metropolitan cities and concerned about green issues. I have divided these people into 3 groups to compare their attitude and understandings on green issues and activities. Those groups are:
A. Green Professionals:
People who use green activities/solutions as part of their job role. These people are scientists, designers and green activists.

B. Extremely Green concerned people:
Collective of people who claim to live ultimate green lives. I also contacted people in different countries to compare the difference on what is extreme green activity. These countries are U.K., German and Japan.

C. Ordinary people:
Collective of people that don’t have any emotions towards green issues. I contacted people in varies countries to compare the difference on what is the minimum understanding. These countries are U.K., German and Japan.

3. The relationship:
I started my research by having informal conversations with neighbors, friends and strangers in London and Japan. Then, I concentrated on people who are extremely concerned about green activities and engaged in discussions about their opinion on green issues in depth. These people include Greenpeace activists, eco-biologist and product designers. To get insight into other people’s opinions, I also attended some eco-friendly presentations.

4. The methods:
The initial research was informal conversation, email interviews and observation on target social groups, as well from researching the internet, books, papers and magazines. With this I generated the opinions and general views on green issues and current solutions.

Next phase of engagement method was by giving a presentation of my project followed by debate session. These sessions lasted about 30 minutes to one hour, and it probed audiences on their attitudes towards green activities and their imaginations / suggestions of issues relating to green future. With every presentation I gave, I gained more feedback to further evaluate the project concepts. The audience at my presentations ranged from one to one session, to a conference with four hundred people. The occupations of the audience included biologists, professional interaction designers, housewives, eco-worriers and students.
Attending green presentations allowed me to investigate on presenter and audience’s opinion.

5. The result:
A characteristic of current green trends is, that many people possess a strong desire to expressing their eco friendliness. A neighbor of mine once pointed out that if she is not eco friendly, she feels guilty.
One of the most interesting stories I was told by a 32years old Japanese designer, claiming that she is one of the “eco victims”. Since she was six years old, the Japanese government has been enforcing the recycling of plastic packaging. Her schoolteachers and parents told her, that the collection of plastic bottles from streets, her house or school was an important and good thing. She believed that recycling is saving the Planet. She felt as if she was a super hero.
Few years ago, she was commissioned to design an eco friendly beer bottle, so she started to research through recycling matters. She was very shocked as she found that there is no company buying collected bottles to recycle them, as it was costing more than producing new bottles.
Japanese government ended up with creating more wasteland for these collected bottles.

It was not only this person, but I was also very shocked with the fact she told me, as I was doing same thing when I was kid: I was the serious green person.

The main finding from my research is that many current green solutions became hypocritical because they are used as a medium of consumerism. From this finding, the purpose of my project became making a critical point of view on the current general green vision. To provoke a debate to stimulate audience’s imagination and opinions on their own green future, I have now created a group of people who is extremely concerned about green environment, called “Extreme Green Guerillas”(E.G.G.s). They are collectives of amateur self-sustaining people, who know that we must be extreme to save the Earth, but still try to enjoy a good quality of life in disaster situations. By going through research and experiments in various green solutions, their ultimate green solution became enhancement of the Bio-system by using high technology, such as RFID and Genetic Modification. Within this context, the project has spread into four design proposals in E.G.G.’s life.

Story (Taken from Wikipedia)

Parasite centers on a teenage boy named Shinichi Izumi (Shin in the Mixx English version.) He lives with his mother and father in a rather quiet neighborhood when, one night, an alien invasion occurs. The aliens are called Parasites. They are worm-like creatures that enter human “hosts” through their ears or noses, and take over their brains. In the Japanese version, a parasite takes over his right hand and it is named Migi (ミギー, Migii). In the Mixx English version, it takes over his left hand (because the images in the book are flipped to allow for left-to-right reading) and is named “Lefty. Because the Parasite infected his hand instead of his brain, Shinichi and Migi each retain their own, separate intellect.

I remember that everone was talking about this Manga at the time when it was published serially in magazine Afternoon. I was not so interested in,as I was not mature enough. It was very popular by University boys, especially so called geek boys. At the time, Geek people were not as open/popular as now, so that this manga gave me an impression of Underground Manga. A few year ago, I bumped into Parasite in Manga kissa(cafe) in Shibuya. I was astonished with the depth of story. Even though “Being able to control evil parasite in the body” is obviously influenced by “Devil Man” by Go Nagai ( serialized 1972 – 1972, Shonen Magazine), this story gives you more horro aspect on bein parasited by monsters through sparp expression of drawing and use of expressions.

青年漫画（せいねんまんが）は、少年漫画より年齢層の高い読者層を想定した漫画。

Youth Manga is targeted to people who is older than Manga for Boys.

かつては主に18歳以上の男性を対象としていたが、今では中高生や女性でも読む人が増え、少年漫画との境界も薄れつつある。現在最も市場が大きい漫画でも ある。内容としては、性的・暴力的なテーマを掲げ、際どい描写が多くなってきたり、本格的なミステリーや高校・大学生活などを描いていたりする点が特徴。 ドラマ化・映画化が多いためアニメを嫌う人にも定評がある。

It used to targed to audience only older than 18years old men, but more women and teenager start to read recently, as well as it is getting similar to Manga-Boys. This genre is the biggest sales in Manga world at present. The contents include sexual & violent theme with sharp expression, legitimate mistery stories or high school/university lives. Many Mangas proceeded to Animation and sitcom, so that people who is not keen on Manga also value Mangas in this genre.

作者を代表する大ヒット女子柔道漫画。柔道家の祖父、猪熊滋悟郎の元で柔道に明け暮れていた少女 猪熊柔が、祖父に反発しながらも天性の柔道の才能を発揮し世界へ雄飛するストーリー。1989年にアニメ化された。主人公の名前は連載当時活躍し始めた女子柔道選手田村亮子（現・谷亮子）の愛称にもなった。ちなみに、今でこそ谷亮子にYAWARAちゃんの愛称が定着したが、主人公のモデルは女子柔道界の黎明期に活躍した女三四郎こと山口香だと言われている。その本人も作中に山田香の名前で猪熊柔のライバルとして登場している（YAWARA!参照）

Yawara! A Fashionable Judo Girl was Urasawa’s first official work and real breakthrough; Published from 1986 to 1993 (serialized in Big Comic Spirits, 1987-93), this manga has 29 volumes in total. This judo romance comedy is about a female judo champion who wants to have fun just like other girls, but her strict grandfather wants her to triumph in tournaments. Yawara! won the 35th Shogakukan Manga Award in 1990.

SAS出身で、今は保険会社のオプ（調査員―日本で言うアジャスターの事）として働く日英ハーフの考古学研究者にして大学講師、キートンの遭遇する様々な事件を描く。

Just after Pinneaple ARMY and while writing Yawara!, Urasawa began one of his most famous works, Master Keaton. Master Keaton was published from 1988 to 1994 (serialized in Big Comic Original, 1988-94), and consists of 18 volumes in total. Hokusei Katsushika worked with Urasawa on it. The story revolves around a boy born to an English woman of noble birth and a Japanese zoologist. After his parents’ divorce at the age of 5, Keaton moves to England with his mother. As an adult, he studies archeology at Oxford University, where he meets his future wife with whom he has a daughter (Yuriko). However, they too divorce after five years. Meanwhile, Keaton works as an operative/detective for Lloyd’s of London where he is known for his abilities he acquired as a master sergeant in the SAS, as a veteran of the Falklands War, and as one of the members of the Iran Embassy incident. These experiences help him carry out his dangerous work as an insurance investigator. Although he works at Lloyds, his dream is to excavate an ancient civilization in a Danube basin.

兄の残した借金2億5千万円を返済するため、プロのテニスプレイヤーになる事を決心する海野幸の物語。2006年4月にTBS系でテレビドラマ化され、同年12月に第2弾『Happy!2』が相武紗季主演で放映された。

Just after Yawara!, Urasawa began writing Happy!, which began in 1993 and ended in 1999. Happy! consists of 23 volumes in total. The copy from the back of the first tankoubon reads: “Miyuki Umino was a senior in high-school. Although Miyuki, her two younger brothers and her younger sister were poor, they were happy living together. But, one day all of a sudden her older brother’s debt of 250 million yen fell upon them. To pay back the debt Miyuki quit school. What was the incredible choice she took to do this?”.

In 1994, after finishing Master Keaton, Urasawa began writing the manga which would become his most famous work: Monster. He wrote Monster alongside Happy!, with Monster ending in 2001. Monster consists of 18 volumes in total and was serialized in Big Comic (1995-2001). Monster is licensed by Viz, and appears to be on a quarterly release schedule. The text on the cover of the first tankoubon reads: “Dusseldorf, West-Germany in 1986. One day, Dr. Kenzo Tenma ignored his boss’s order and executed humanitarian rescue of a man’s child. That’s how this horrible story begins!!”.

Published by Shogakukan from 1986 to 1988, this is a side-work produced alongside Yawara!. Pinneaple ARMY is composed of 10 volumes in total. The story was written by Kazuya Kudou and the artwork is Urasawa’s. The plot is about an ex-military man who trains others to defend themselves on the condition that he never gets involved… but eventually he always does.

I have now curated my favorite/favoured by Japanese Manga in Japanese history.

To start with, I had to divide Japanese Manga into 5 categories by their authers. Japanese Manga is originally appear in weekly/monthly thick Manga magazines, which is already categorized into the target audience age. It is basic way of choosing what kind of Manga the audience want to read in Japan.

The categories are:

4.少女漫画 Manga-Girls

5.青年漫画 Manga-Youth

In each categories, I have extracted and listed Mangas which :

I will explain and list very important Mangas in each categories.

Then I will write about memories/comments/histories around each Manga day by day, so that you will know the insight of Manga in Japan.

Are these efforts really improving the environment? Are these activities saving the Earth? What is eco-friendly living? When we live in a period where the worst climate disaster is about to happen, how can we live the ultimate green lifestyle?

The context:
My project takes current green trends to the extreme. I am proposing a community of people called “Extreme Green Guerrillas” (E.G.G.).
They are a network of amateur self-sustaining people who have shortened their lifespan to sustain the ultimate green lifestyle. Whilst going to extreme lengths to protect the environment, they try to enjoy a decadent quality of life by utilizing urban waste and biosystem. This consists of embracing emerging technology to develop the ultimate green solution.

Design Approach:
Objectives of the project:
I would like to give a critical point of view on the current general green visions, because many green activities are used as a medium of consumerism, and become hypocritical solution. Even though climate disaster might be happening, I don’t want people to panic and just follow what they are told to do.
By illustrating an extreme green scenario through E.G.G. manual book, I would like people to think of the core problems and debate about it.
My point is not to say that this is the solution nor the future. My role is more to provoke with intriguiging artworks, have people question their lifestyle and get the debate on green issues going.

Part1: Animal Messaging Service
(A.M.S)

Context:
Extreme green guerrilla is against using the Internet or mobile phones for communication, as this method will tie them to big corporation.
E.G.G. are also against conventional posting service, as it leaves a great CO2 footprint. What could be the E.G.G. way of communication?

Outcome:
E.G.G. send messages internationally by hacking into the animal migration system. In natural sanctuaries environmental protection agencies tag migrating animals with active RFID tags. E.G.G.s hack into these tagged animals to send digital messages internationally.

Part2: E.G.G. delicacy

Context:
Do you buy only organic products? Free range eggs to support happy chickens? Somehow modern society has mistaken being healthy with green activity. Although individuals can be healthy by eating good food, this activity doesn’t necessarily mean the Earth is healthy. If you are an extreme green person, what do you eat?

Outcome:
Extreme green guerrilla’s food has to be resourced from existing materials within the local area. By modifying the urban vermin, such as pigeons and rats, extreme green guerrillas have created more edible and gourmet like delicacy. One example is an animal called Piguail, which is hybrid of Pigeon (vermin) and Quail (gourmet).

Part3: E.G.G. Death

Context:
The Earth is too crowded for sustainability, therefore premature death is the ultimate gesture practiced by the extreme green guerrillas. What would be the ritual they would practice?

Outcome:
When a member of Extreme green guerrillas becomes twenty years old, his/her ears are pierced with a euthanasing earring, this contains muscle relaxant and a lethal drug. This is a part of the ceremony E.G.G.s celebrate when this person reaches adulthood. This pierced earring becomes a permanent fixture.
Throughout their life the inner core of the earring rotates day by day. On their fortieth birthday, the muscle relaxant and lethal drug are released through a hypodermic needle, leading to peaceful death. By promoting a young death, extreme green guerrillas can sustain the ultimate green life. If you know your life will last only forty years, how would you behave?

If you are an extreme green person, what do you eat? Do you buy only organic products? Free range eggs to support happy chickens? Being vegan to save the planet? Somehow, modern society has mistaken that being healthy is the green activity. Although you can be healthy by eating good food, this activity doesn’t necessarily leading planet Earth (Gaia) healthy. Moreover, the Earth becomes unhealthy by having too many healthy spoiled human to sustain. So, what can we eat if we are extreme green guerrilla?

To be invisible in the natural system of food chain /food pyramid, E.G.G.s have developed GMO(genetically modified organisms) technology further, so that the minimum resource (animal/plants) can feed more people. they have modified wild animals to be beneficial to both human and animals. in this way, they don’t need to feed the animal.
